What happened?
When India and Pakistan meet on the cricket field, it’s never just a game. Their matchups carry huge emotional weight, huge crowds, media attention, and national pride. During the Asia Cup 2025(code of conduct), these encounters were especially charged: on 14 Sept, 21 Sept and the final on 28 Sept, India and Pakistan locked horns in high-stakes games. The tension spilled over the boundary ropes and into post-match conduct too.
In such an atmosphere, there’s a risk that players’ conduct might cross into areas that the ICC considers unacceptable — not just bad luck on the field, but actions that “bring the game into disrepute”.

What rules were at stake?
The ICC has a Code of Conduct that all international players must follow. One relevant part is Article 2.21, which speaks to “conduct that brings the game into disrepute”.
Another relevant part is Article 2.6, which deals with “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting”.
In short: the game expects players to behave with a degree of sportsmanship, to avoid offensive gestures or actions that reflect poorly on cricket as a whole.
The players involved & what happened
Here are the main players who were sanctioned after the India-Pakistan Asia Cup games:
Suryakumar Yadav (India)
- On 14 Sept, playing against Pakistan, he was found guilty of breaching Article 2.21 (“bringing the game into disrepute”).
- The penalty: a fine of 30% of his match fee and 2 demerit points.
- While some might argue his on-field conduct was within the heat of the moment, the ICC deemed it crossed the line.
Sahibzada Farhan (Pakistan)
- Also on 14 Sept, he was found guilty of the same Article 2.21 breach.
- His penalty: an official warning + 1 demerit point.
- According to reports, his celebration (using his bat like a gun) after a half-century drew attention.
Haris Rauf (Pakistan)
- On 14 Sept: Found guilty of Article 2.21 — fined 30% match fee + 2 demerit points.
- On 28 Sept (Final): He repeated an offence under the same article. The ICC again penalised him: another 30% match fee fine + 2 more demerit points.
- Because his total reached 4 demerit points within 24 months, this triggered 2 suspension points under ICC rules → which translated into a 2-match ODI ban for Pakistan.
Jasprit Bumrah (India)
- During the final (28 Sept), he accepted a charge under Article 2.21.
- He received an official warning + 1 demerit point. No ban or fine beyond that.
Arshdeep Singh (India)
- On 21 Sept: Alleged to have committed a gesture offence under Article 2.6.
- But the ICC found him not guilty, so no sanction was imposed.
Why does this matter?
- Maintaining standards: The ICC’s job isn’t just about runs and wickets. It’s about ensuring cricket remains a sport played with respect, integrity and fair spirit. When matches carry political or emotional weight (like India vs Pakistan often do), extra behaviour scrutiny becomes inevitable.
- Role-models matter: These are international stars. Their actions are seen not only by the stadium crowd, but by millions on TV and social media. If gestures or celebrations cross into disrespectful territory, it tarnishes the sport’s image.
- Consequences exist: The sanctions here were real — fines, demerit points, even suspension for Rauf. It sends a message: emotional intensity is expected, but conduct still has boundaries.
- Balance of culture and competition: Rivalry fuels excitement, but when personal or national pride overshadows sportsmanship, it risks undermining the very nature of competition.
In The End
The Asia Cup 2025 India-Pakistan matches reminded us how powerful sport can be — full of drama, passion and national pride. But they also reminded us that the same fire can backfire when it spills over into behaviour that brings the game into disrepute.
For fans: enjoy the intensity, the skill, the rivalry — but also appreciate the role of respect and sportsmanship. For players: competition is fierce, but the code is clear.
In short: cricket isn’t just about what happens with the bat and ball — it’s also about what happens around them.
